Spring ‘22 Seminar Descriptions

Academic Support – Are you attending ABSE or LCC classes? Are you interested in preparing for these? Academic Support can help with homework & test preparation.

Assessments and Smart Goals – Have your interests and goals changed over the last few years? Students will ill out assessments and use the scores on the various tests to develop Smart Goals.

Budget me Thi$ – Learning about how to be smart(er) with your money. Some topics will be; actual cost of credit cards, living by yourself, eating out, owning a car etc.

(Worksite) Cognitopia – In this class you get to work on usability of software products, and learn how to track and share progress on your goals.

Cooking Corner – Learn the basics of cooking! Students will focus on essential cooking skills needed for home cooking. Practicing skills such as measuring, sautéing, roasting, and boiling, safety in the kitchen when using various kitchen appliances and tools will be a goal. Students will also have the opportunity to cook their own recipes. How can we make your recipes healthier?

Couch to 5K – As a group we will go for a walk/run around the track at Churchill. We will set goals and keep track of progress. For students that want to (not required), we will sign up for and run/walk in an actual 5K race!

Grill & Chill – This class will focus on practicing safety while exploring and using an outdoor gas grill and all its features. We will also have social conversations and discuss expectations relating to hosting or being invited to a BBQ. This class pairs well with the class “Plan an Event” (WED, 2-3).

(Worksite) H4H ReStore – Students perform a variety of duties, including cleaning, stocking, pricing, merchandising, and unloading the trucks.

Hidden Rules in Plain Sight – We will explore what the expectations are in various settings. We will do Role-Plays, have discussions / watch videos and practice how to get comfortable in most places.

I Ripped My Pants! – Clothing keeps us warm, covered, expresses our personality and makes an impression. We will learn basic techniques to care for your clothes such as proper washing, care and storage. The class will also learn to repair clothes by patching and hand sewing. We will also discuss personal style and how different clothes are appropriate for different situations.

Is it a Medical Emergency? – As a class we’ll go over more common accidents/injuries in various settings and what to do in those situations. We will go over the basics of what a First Aid kit entails and how to use it. We’ll also look into insurance and costs involved with going to the Doctor.

Job Club – This class will focus on skill-building and strategies (such as communication, crafting a resume, time management and organizational skills) to successfully work with boss & co-workers.

Keep Yourself Centered – Keeping yourself centered is about learning to train your attention to the present moment without dwelling on what has happened in the past or worrying about the future. It provides many physical and psychological bene its. Explore some of these bene its in this class!

Map It – Plan (Tuesday) – As a group students will make plans to various destinations in the community. The focus will be on agencies and recreational destinations.

Map It – Trip (Thursday) – As a group students go to various destinations in the community and “interview” or get tours from community members / agencies.

Math for Life – Math is everywhere; learn how to make Math work for you! Brush up on your math skills using various strategies. We will review some basic math skills in addition to exploring math related to money management, workplace math, measurement and time management.

Meatless Mondays – Research done at Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, has shown that by going meatless (even one day a week) can not only improve our own health, but the health of the planet as well. In this seminar you will learn more about the Global Meatless Monday Movement, and how to create some really delicious plant based meals, smoothies and snacks.

Over the Hill and Down the Road – We will be traveling in the activity van to local nature trails. We will also learn about how to travel to these trails with public transit so that you can learn how to access them for future exercise and recreation. We will stretch before each hike and learn healthy living and physical itness skills. Prerequisite: Ability to walk one mile.

Plan an Event – We will look into, and practice, all the steps required to make an event happen. We will plan some group events, but also encourage students to plan for their own independent plans.

Productive Lifestyle – What does it mean to live a productive life? In this class we will cover every topic from being aware of your personal hygiene, having clear targets & goals, problem-solving skills, the importance of punctuality, knowing when to say no, being lexible, and we will even touch on sleep habits and positive daily routines.

Spring Fever; Planned Parenthood Presentation – Presentations discussing topics like reproductive anatomy & physiology, puberty, healthy realtionships/abuse prevention, safe sex education, consent, sexual hygiene & STIs, sexual feelings management and sexcual decision making.

Stretch Yourself – Morning yoga and meditation is a great way to help your body and mind. Please bring loose comfortable clothing and a yoga mat will be provided.

Super Heroes – You are your own superhero! We will look at different heroes in real life and popular culture and you will create your own to inspire you everyday.

What’s Going on in the World? – Examining world events, media literacy (how can media in luence your opinions?), public speaking and sharing your opinion in a concise and clear manner.

What’s Right or Wrong? – We will learn different ways to make decisions based on your personal morals and values.

Writing for Life – Texts, emails and other forms of written communication is an important way to advocate for yourself. We will learn how to improve our writing skills by learning some basic grammar and editing.

Winter 2022 Seminar Descriptions

Academic Support is a place where students can get extra help and in-class time to complete classroom assignments in LCC’s Adult Education Classes

Blogging, Writing and Designing; Communicating through the internet is an important skill.  We will maintain the Connections Transition Times Blog and you can create your own blog, website etc.

Clean My Crib; Thinking about getting your own place? Learn all the skills YOU need to keep your space neat & clean.

Cooking; Learn how to safely cook simple, nutritious meals in our Connections kitchen.

Fitness Counts; Tracking your fitness progress has been shown to be an effective motivator and shows progress.  We will track and record your workouts.

Finding and Keeping Your Crib; Do you want to live on your own one day?  We will learn how to find, decide where to live and how to keep and apartment.

Healthy Body; Learn everything you need to know about keeping and maintaining a healthy body! 

Healthy Relationships; Good relationships are important for your long term health and safety.  Discover how to build relationships and how to identify unhealthy ones.

Job Club; Seminars will focus on job readiness skills and behaviors. Students will explore interest areas, how to find jobs, apply for jobs, work on resumes, practice job interviews etc.

Map It; There are 2 parts to this class: The first part is planning and reviewing trips, and second is to actually go out on trips in our community. This term there will be more focus on vocational opportunities. We’ll set up meetings to get short tours of the business we’re visiting. On the planning day we’ll prepare questions to ask the person representing the business, as well as making the bus-plan. We will be using the LTD bus.

Mystery Guest/Active Games; In this class we’ll invite presenters from our community to share their experiences and knowledge in various topics (former students, social&rec. agencies, financial, vocational,  healthy relationships/ mental health, academic). One key point to this class is that we are an active audience. We will be preparing questions ahead of time. On days where we have no presenter available we’ll get active with games.

School Store Class; Be an entrepreneur.  Run your own business. Learn about margin, finance, inventory, and making money!

Slow Down Mario; We will use multiple strategies to learn the DMV permit test book and practice the skills so you can start driving!

Smart Shopping; We will go into the community to various grocery stores using the activity van to purchase groceries for the cooking class.  We will learn about unit price and cost comparison.

Spiffy Up My Crib; So, you got your first apartment: now what? This class will discuss wants vs needs when it comes to your new home. There will be some DIY activities that will make you apartment look great even on a tight budget. 

Swimming (Echo Hollow Pool); Students will either be able to swim in the pool or use the workout room to improve their physical fitness.

TGIF; Do you have plans for the weekend or school breaks?  We will explore different options in Eugene that are free or low cost.

Tools of the Trade; Explore countless cooking methods, utensils, appliances, and safety tools. Become an expert today!

VOCATIONAL:

Cognitopia Students test Cognitopia Software products such as Goal Guide, Scando and My Life. Students will communicate their experience using these products to the Cogniopia Designers and Developers to improve use.

HFH Restore is a fun, active place to get some work experience.  Students perform a variety of duties, including cleaning, stocking, pricing, merchandising, and unloading the trucks!

Grass Roots Garden Students will work at the Grassroots garden with various outdoor tasks. Using your hands or tools, harvesting and preparing the garden for the season.
