Howdy Roadrunners,

It’s a short 3-day week this week and will hopefully be a quiet one outside of our pie eating contest at the Roadrunner Award Assembly Wednesday!

Ten items of note for this week:

• Roadrunner Awards Assembly, WEDNESDAY – This Wednesday at 8:15 is the all-school Roadrunner Awards Assembly. See Mellissa’s Assembly Email and the attached Assembly Map & Directions for details, but the short version is the assembly will run like last time with a few tweaks and a pie eating competition for the intermission entertainment.

And for pre-teaching assembly behavior expectations, remember there’s slide four of the Back to School PBIS Refresher and also a nice lesson in the Caring School Community curriculum class meeting lessons.

• Tailfeather Reward – Movie Day, WEDNESDAY – Wednesday is also our PBIS Tailfeather Movie Day reward. See Mellissa’s Earlier Tailfeather Challenge Email for details on this event, but grade levels will have a 45 minute block of time for kids to watch a movie sometime in the afternoon, which will include popcorn courtesy of the PTO.

• Mice! Keep Food in Bins! – Mice have officially invaded out Howard. If you don’t believe that, just watch the Facebook livesteam video of the November PTO Meeting when I mouse ran behind me and the PTO president. In any case, keep all food inside enclosed plastic containers. Keeping them in draws or finding cabinets will not keep out mice. See the linked 4J Integrated Pest Management Document I shared earlier for guidelines on how to store food in the classroom, but I know I will be bringing plastic containers for my office snacks on Monday.

• SPED Updates and Info Presentation – Linked here is Karen Apgar’s SPED Slide Show from last week’s staff meeting if anyone is interested in reviewing the information. This can also be found on the Shared Howard Google Drive at Meeting/Teams > Staff Meetings > 2019-2020 > 2019-19-19

• LAST CALL: United Way Pledge Forms DUE WED – If you choose to participate in the annual United Way Pledge Drive, please return forms to my mailbox by this Wednesday.

• REMINDER: Staff Parking Areas (not the front row) – Since we’ve hired quite a few staff since the start of the year, I thought I’d remind everyone of the designated staff parking areas, which is anywhere in the parking lot except for the front row of parking spaces (the three handicap parking spots and 12 regular parking spots) which I’d like to reserve for families. With over 80 adults working in our building this year and only 94 parking spots it’s a pretty tight fit.

• List of Social Services – Similar to the Parenting Now Resources for Families (English and Spanish), linked here is a very comprehensive resource guide from the Relief Nursery Community Resource Guide, which lists resources ranging from counseling, to anger management, to immigration assistance, to 38 more pages of local resources for families.

• Struggle is Good! I Want to Fly! – Here is a good Very Short Short Story (only 460 words) about the importance of “the struggle” as a part of learning. I don’t want to ruin the ending, but check this one out when you have a moment. .

• Using Culturally Responsive Lessons to Boost Engagement – Identifying students’ likes and interests and connecting them to course content is a good way to get students motivated to learn. See this Edutopia Article for details!
