Howdy All,

Just five days until spring break and fifteen times of note for this week:

• 19/20 Staffing Timeline – I’m still waiting on downtown regarding our staffing allocations, which I holding up my communicating out our staffing plan for next year, but I will talk with any staff this week who’s positions would be charing and will send out an email later this week of our final staffing plan.

• 19/20 Specialist Staffing – I did get some specialist staffing updates from downtown. Michelle and Siera will continue as Howard’s PE and Music teachers for next year. Also, all of our licensed SPED Team, Bryan, Katie, Linda, and Rae, but one change is that Katie will be full-time CLC and we are adding a 0.5 FTE Learning Center teacher, which will may get posted at the Job Expo. If it does get posted, be sure to let any awesome teacher friends know they should apply. For SPED Classified Staffing, Leila came by last Thursday to talk with staff who had changes in hours or assignment. Most staff stayed the same and I will share a complete list once I get that from SSD. Building funded Classified positions are also in a holding pattern until I get some answers from downtown, but should know early this week. Watch for updates this later week.

• Classified Staff Evaluation Meetings This Week – This weekend I finished classified staff evaluations for all Howard classified staff. Please come by my office or find me sometime this week to go over your annual evaluation and sign the form to make it official. Evaluations need to be completed by the end of the week.

• March Fire Drill Friday @8:40 – I’m playing with fire and scheduled the March Fire Drill on the last day possible, so hopefully Friday at 8:40 isn’t rainy.

• Care Team Referrals due Tuesday – Short notice, but the Student Care Team is meeting this Thursday if staff have any students or family situations they would like to refer to the team. We have a high number of students in difficult situations, so please let me know if you have any families who are looking for help (referral form English and Spanish and English/Spanish Care Team Flyer) or any “hypothetical” situations to bring to the team.

• Readathon Reminders – The PTO Readathon goes through the end of the month, so there are only two more Mondays to enter minutes for your class. I know this ended up being more work for teachers than it sounded, but I would encourage teachers to update the Readathon Google Doc on Mondays, so it doesn’t take up too much prep time. And to help motivate kids, remind kids that at the end of Readathon, the top reader in each classroom will receive a pass to Defy Eugene!

• PLC Meetings After Spring Break – Not this week, but Tuesday and Wednesday the week after spring break are Grade Level PLC Meetings with roving subs. Dates and times for grade level teams are:

Tuesday, April 2

1st – 8:30-9:30
2nd – 10:00-11:00
5th – 11:15-12:15

Wednesday, April 3

KG – 11:10-12:10
3rd – 12:15-1:15
4th – 1:25-2:25

• Late April PLC Date Change – The second PLC date for April has been moved to May to avoid overlapping with OAKS testing, so instead of April 29 and 30, it will now be on Tuesday, May 22 and Wednesday, May 23.

• Friday Early Release PD Updates – A repeat from an email sent to howard_cert last Friday, bu this week’s Early Release PD will be part two of the Reading Progress Monitoring Meeting. Also, it was decided that we’d move this one early release meeting to 1:30 instead of 2:30. This also moved the March PBIS Meeting to Wednesday at 2:45.

• NearPod + Social Emotional – Angela emailed staff earlier, but here’s a link to all of the Free NearPod Social Emotional Lessons. This is the search results for “social emotional” and filtered by free, so it includes the one Angela referenced that was created by NearPod, but there are also free lessons including several created by TeachingTolerance.

• Extra Staff Photos Available – If anyone would like a composite staff photo, there are extras in the Staff Room.

• Extra Clay Available – There’s a fair amount of clay left in the custodial storage area if any teachers want to use it before the end of the school year, before it dries out. There are several folks on staff who know a thing or two about clay and who also know how to run the kiln, so you might check in with one of these folks before starting (definitely check in if you’re going to use the kiln).

• REPEAT: PTO Meeting TUESDAY – Not this week, but next week is the March PTO Meeting. Please save the date if you are able to come to the meeting Wednesday next week at 6:00 in the cafeteria.

• Movement And Breathing Breaks Help Students Stay Focused On Learning – Research has shown that short movement breaks help students get focused, improving both skill-building and knowledge retention. See this Mind/Shift Article for details (as if you didn’t already know this was a good idea).
