Hello All,

It’s a short three day week and I’m sure folks are looking forward to spending time with family over the four day holiday weekend. This past weekend, the Chinn house was the Sick House, with both Kim and I down for the count, resting and napping in shifts while the other entertained our non-sick children. For that reason, I’m glad this is a nice short week.

Seven items of note for this week:

• United Way Pledge Drive Nearing an End – Next week will be the last week for staff to turn in your United Way pledge forms. Remember, you can do a one-time donation or do a small monthly donation. Donations can also be targeted through EEF to go directly to certain classrooms, grade levels or programs here at Howard. Also remember, if we have a higher participation rate than Awbrey Park, their principal will have to buy us all Jamba Juice!

• PTO Meeting, Tuesday at 6:00 – This Tuesday is the November PTO meeting. It will start at 6:00 PM in the library. The previous meetings have all ended well ahead of time, so please consider signing up to be the staff rep at the November meeting. It’s always nice to have a staff rep there besides myself!

• Student Restroom Reminder – Please remind your students about school restroom rules. We’ve have quite a few toilet paper messes left in the girls restroom near the library. We’ve also had someone in the boys restroom near the library climbing on the stalls because one of stall sides actually got detached from the wall this past week. Since all students are down at that end now for PE and Music (and after school too), please remind your students of the restroom expectations. Thank you!

• Earthquake/Fire Drill, Tuesday at 8:30 – We’ll hold our November Fire Drill this Tuesday at 8:30. We’ll also hold one of our required earthquake drills prior to the fire drill evacuation. Be sure to review the fire drill and earthquake procedures prior to the drill. Now that we have PE and Music, those specialists will exit the building with their classes and line up in front of the east wing of the building. Classroom teachers for those classes should meet your class at that end of the building, since, in most cases, you will be the ones who will know how many students are present that day.

• IPBS Team Sub Plans Reminder – A quick reminder from the IPBS team, if you are going to have a sub, be sure to leave notes on any students on behavior support plans. This will not only help the student, but will also help the substitute have a much better day.

• iPad Tips – Here is a beginners blog post on using iPads in the classroom which considers several management issues.  There is a slide show at the end of the post which includes over 100 ideas on using iPads for education. There are tips that range from increasing reading fluency to using your iPad as a smart board to an IEP writing checklist.  Check it out. Below is an infographic that shares several apps you may already be familiar with and some more advanced apps. I like the way the author organizes the apps into three categories: consume, collaborate and produce.
