Hi Everyone,

It feels like school is now in full swing and it’s hard to believe we’re almost through the first month of school!

Eight items of note for this week:

• Writing Work Samples Due – A quick reminder that fall writing work samples are due this Friday, September 28th. Specialists, if you are pulling students from gen ed for writing, make sure that those students have also completed their work samples. All student final copies are due to me by the end of the day this Friday.

• October 5th PD Day – I’ll be sending out the formal agenda once I confirm some times from presenters, but we’ll be working together in the AM on writing and writing work samples with Kathy Luiten, doing some Caring School Community planning around “Buddy Teacher Pairs” and lastly we’ll have an iPad training with Misty Forseman. More info to come soon!

• Morning Meeting Visits – I’ve stopped by a few classrooms during morning meetings, but I wanted to let teachers know that this week I’m going to start visiting classrooms to join in on the meetings. I’m planning to start with the older grades and then work my way down.

• 2012 Oregon Inservice Bulletin – October 12th is an unpaid day for teachers and I’m not sure who all was on the distribution list that received this workshop listing, but if you are looking for something to attend on state inservice day, this is the ODE list.

• Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month – Millions of children trace their ancestry to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Celebrate their cultures and contributions during National Hispanic American Heritage Month, now through Oct. 15. The commemoration was first marked by President Johnson and later expanded by President Reagan. Find Teaching Tolerance resources here and and see the above link for for further teacher resources listed at the bottom of that page.

• Papa’s Pizza Student Incentive Award – Papa’s Pizza is offering achievement awards that can be given to students for good behavior or reaching other teacher set goals as an incentive. The students receiving the awards can redeem them at Papa’s Pizza for a free mini pizza. If you you’d like some of these for your class, please let me know by end of the week how many you’d like. Papa’s said they can provide them all school year long.

• EEF Back to School Celebration – A repeat from last week, but I’m looking for a volunteer to attend the Eugene Education Foundation’s Back to School Celebration on Tuesday, October 9th at the LCC Conference Center. I’ll be one of our reps, but let me know if any of you would be able to attend as our other guest. There’s a free meal in it for you!

• Building 4J’S Future: Community Forums – One more repeat from last week. 4J is wanting principals to bring 4-5 people to the community forums regarding the facilities proposal, so please let me know if you would be able to attend. I’m going the North Region forum on Monday, October 1st from 7:00-8:30 PM at the NEHS cafeteria. If you can’t attend that one, there are three others and one new location below. Thank you!

• Thu., Sept. 27, Chávez Elementary School cafeteria
• Mon., Oct. 1, North Eugene High School cafeteria
• Thu., Oct. 4, Cal Young Middle School cafeteria
• Wed. Oct. 10, Roosevelt Middle School cafeteria (NEW LOCATION)

Have an excellent week, everyone!
