Today we did a proofreading warm-up and wrote in journals. We did an exercise in making inferences using an excerpt from “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.” In social studies, we followed up on our lesson about the fall of Rome and started chapter 2 lesson 3 about the Byzantine Empire. More time will be given to finish up the written assignment.

Today we did a reading comprehension warm-up and wrote in journals. We also did another exercise in recognizing inference in reading passages. We discussed charities to donate money generated from the “shout-outs” in our newspaper and decided on Kids for Kids. In social studies we read chapter 2 lesson 2 about the fall of Rome.

Homework:

-finish the terms and names and graphic organizer for chapter 2 lesson 2 if you didn’t already turn it in today.

Sorry this is a day late…busy day yesterday. We wrote in journals and worked in groups on our newspaper. Groups are working very well together and generating many great ideas. There was no homework.

Today we did a sentence combining warm-up and wrote in journals. Next, Mr. Tromba was our guest and talked about school newspapers to help us get ours off the ground. We spent the rest of our time dividing into groups, choosing editors, and deciding on articles for our first edition.

In language arts today, we did a vocabulary warm-up, wrote in journals, and looked at making inferences in two passages. In social studies, we learned a little about the struggles between the Roman patricians and plebeians through a simulation activity.

-finish the inference worksheet if you didn’t turn it in during class.

November 13, 2009

Today we did journal entries and brainstormed about starting a school newspaper in block class. More to come on this project, but many good ideas were generated! In social studies we finished reading the play and worked on two handouts that were due in class today.

-none this weekend, although grades are updated and it’s always a good idea to catch up on missing work!

We started again with a warm up and writing in journals. Next we saw a video on imaginative and narrative writing and practiced note-taking. In social studies we began reading a play about Rome that depicts the struggles between the patricians and the plebeians and how the government evolved.

-bring donations of clothing, stuffed animals, food, toys etc. for the Peace Jam homeless project.

Today we did a warm up and wrote in journals. Next, we looked at how to read a chart for social studies and practiced in groups. We also had a presentation from students in the Peace Jam class who are planning two fundraising activities for the homeless people in our area. One is a social on Friday, November 20th from 7-9 pm (if more parent volunteers are willing to chaperone), and the second is a garage sale at Monroe on Saturday, November 21st from 10 am to 4 pm. Donations are requested for the garage sale.

Homework:

-missing work…check the online grades, they were updated today.

Today we started our journal writing unit. We will write for ten minutes each day and the topic is the student’s choice. We also did a critical thinking reading where students read a selection, answer questions and then discuss their answers in small groups. In social studies we finished chapter 2 lesson 1. I also handed out the last book order forms for this calendar year.

-Finish terms and names and essential questions for chapter 2 lesson 1.

November 6, 2009

Today we heard all the rest of the speeches except from students who have been absent. We also finished the video on Christianity and kept the notes for our project later in the year. Last, we finished the short story “Mother and Daughter” and filled out a characterization graphic organizer on the two main characters. It is a Venn diagram showing similarities and differences of the mother and daughter.

Homework:

-if the map of Rome wasn’t turned in today, get it done and turned in on Monday.
