Miyax is on the tundra without food, and winter is coming fast. Her only hope now is that she will be able to find where the wolves store their food after hunting. After days of watching the wolves she still has no food. Miyax finds plants to eat but there are not enough to eat for ever. After she thinks she is sure to die the wolves give her one last chance at living. Kapu the young wolf pup shows Miyax how to live. Kapu goes to his mother Silver and nudges his nose into Silver’s mouth. Silver coughs up meat into Kapu’s mouth. Miyax then goes to Jello for meat. When Jello refuses, Kapu makes Jello give her some. Miyax cooks her meat and thinks she will live on the tundra.

Now, Miyax is finally part of the wolf pack. Miyax finds a owl nest with a dead owlet. She eats the owlet for nutrients. Miyax decides to go out hunting for birds and sees a plane. She tries to wave to the plane pilot, but it was too foggy for the pilot to be able to see anything. The plane is like a compass for Miyax and she figures out which way Fairbanks is. The fog rises up over the tundra and it is completely dark at the camp. The wolves attack and catch a caribou. Everyone gets part of the caribou, including Miyax.

Kapugen tells Miyax that she has to live with her aunt Martha. One day, Kapugen calls her Julie, and Miyax gets very angry. She tells Kapugen that she is not a gussak, and that she is an Eskimo. He smiles and agrees. Then Kapugen then goes to war. He also tells Miyax that if she wants to leave Martha she can marry Daniel, Kapugen’s serious partener Naka’s son when she is thirteen. Later, Miyax gets word that Kapugen’s boat was found broken and washed up on the beach. Her heart is broken. Miyax soon finds out that she has to go to school, because the law now says that all children must attend school
